AMD has pulled the wraps off their new A-Series APUs and has confirmed that they are currently shipping them to OEMs across the globe to be incorporated in their upcoming notebooks and desktops. Codenamed “LIano”, the A-series APUs will comply with a new socket and won’t be compatible with existing AM3 or even AM3+ sockets. The APU’s will be built using a 32nm fabrication process thereby giving them a much lower TDP than existing Phenom II CPUs. The desktop platform is called Lynx whereas the mobile/notebook platform is named Sabine. Below are some of the first models that will be launched. The ones with the ‘M’ or ‘MX’ are the notebook chips.
The first wave
There are many new exciting features that come with the new APUs as well. For instance, the onboard GPU in the LIano chips will be the first to support HDMI 1.4a and DisplayPort 1.1 specification. This means you’ll be able to enjoy 3D gaming and 3D Blu-ray video without the need of a discrete graphics card. The performance for gaming would be limited though but movies shouldn’t be an issue. Another new feature introduced in the A-series APUs is called AMD Steady Video. This feature is designed to stabilize video playback which mostly occurs when shooting with a handycam or cell phone. The Fusion APUs will be divided into four segments, each designed for a specific audience. The E2 CPUs is suited for basic computing tasks or even HTPC users, A4 series will have only dual core APUs for slightly better performance.
